Celebrate centuries of Chinese textile tradition with this handcrafted indigo batik wall hanging inspired by an ancient Han Dynasty fish motif. Naturally dyed with plant-based indigo and finished with driftwood and hand-knotted wool fringe, this original artwork blends traditional craftsmanship with relaxed bohemian elegance.

Each tapestry is individually handcrafted using traditional wax-resist batik techniques. Rich indigo gradients, naturally formed wax crackles, and subtle hand-drawn variations make every piece beautifully one of a kind.

In Chinese culture, the fish symbolizes abundance, prosperity, and continuous good fortune, expressing the timeless blessing:

The Story Behind the Design

The fish has been one of the most beloved symbols in Chinese art for over two thousand years.

Inspired by fish imagery from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), this artwork honors one of China's earliest artistic traditions while preserving the beauty of handmade indigo batik.

Because the Chinese word for fish (鱼, yú) sounds like surplus (余, yú), it has long symbolized prosperity, abundance, and blessings that continue from year to year. This connection is reflected in the traditional phrase:

"年年有余" — "May you have abundance every year."

Natural driftwood, soft wool macramé fringe, and flowing indigo gradients bring together traditional Chinese craftsmanship and modern bohemian styling, creating a piece that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Care

Hand wash gently in cold water if needed.

Do not soak.

Air dry naturally in the shade.

Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the natural indigo color.

Please Note

Every wall hanging is individually hand-painted and naturally hand-dyed using traditional batik techniques. Natural variations in indigo color, wax crackle, driftwood shape, and hand-knotted fringe are part of the handmade process, making every piece uniquely yours.
